TEXT: Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran" (Gen 12:1,4)

Since obedience is a major requirement in walking with God, there's need for us to understand what obedience really means. First of all, obedience connotes hearing the word of God and acting on it. It implies that we align our will to God’s will; doing what He asks us to do. It is when we completely surrender to His authority and base our decisions and our actions on His Word that we can be said we are obedient to Him. Obedient to God is so important because it shows that we trust Him. So, our obedience to God is a demonstration of our trust in Him.

Obedience can also mean; following God’s leading even when we are not sure of the outcome. That is what Abraham did. The Bible says: "By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went" (Heb 11:8).

Dear child of God, obedience can be tough; many times it means taking the higher road even when there is the easy way out as an option. Obedience may require sacrifice; discipline and stretching ourselves outside our comfort zone. That why I said that our choice to obey God is the demonstration of our trust in Him. It shows that even though its hard, even though it doesn’t make sense we still do it.

Hebrews 11 gives an account of men from the Old Testament who are recognized as heroes of faith as a result of their acts of obedience. Read the account of them below:

By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named“ (Heb 11:7-8). By faith Joshua and the children of Israel obeyed and went round the walls of Jericho before they went crumbling on the seventh day.

The question now is, are there things in your life that God is asking you to do that are tough? Or that do not make sense? Your obedience will show to God that you trust Him. It will be accounted as the evidence of your faith. Obey God to give even when your budget is tight; obey God and forgive even when it hurts so bad; obey God and work hard even when you have been passed for promotion; obey God and love your unlovable spouse unconditionally. There is a reason why God has put you in that situation.

Remember that obedience is better than sacrifice.

PRAYER: Grace for prompt and tireless obedience is yours from today, in Jesus name.
