TEXT: "And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them" (Acts 16:25)
I want us to look at the account of Paul and Silas again in Acts 16:23-26. The Bible says: "And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely, who having received such a charge thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God, and the prisoners heard them and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed."
Paul and Silas were arrested and put in prison for casting a spirit of divination out of a girl (Read from verse 16). They were subjected to severe torture, nevertheless, in the midst of their suffering and pains, they still found it in their heart to sing praises to God. This sounded ridiculous and strange to the other prisoners, who were used to hearing only the groans and cries of beaten and tortured prisoners. Suddenly, in the midst of their praise, the earth quaked and shook the foundations of the prison, flung its doors open and their bonds were loosed.
The question we should ask ourselves therefore is, what caused the prison doors to open? Beloved, the Presence of God that was provoked by their praise was the cause. Praise lifts us to the Presence of God where our challenges are forgetten. Where the Presence of the Lord is, surely, there is liberty.
